Partnering With You To Keep The Bible At The Center Of Vacation Bible School

While we put a lot of time and thought into our snacks and crafts, we realize that many churches will pool their most creative people and come up with their own amazingly awesome ideas.  We have no problem admitting that children's workers are better at it than the three of us!

That's why we have this site!  If you are going to do crafts other than the ones we provide, please share them.  Who knows?  If your ideas are better, we will add them to the next printing of our manual.  Together we can assist children's workers everywhere!

If we pool our resources we can make this the coolest VBS ever!  Give us your ideas and we'll immediately post them and let everyone know what you came up with!  Thanks for your help.  For a great sample of what we've been given already, check out this craft video by www.ministry-to-children.com!  We are grateful to partner with so many of you to put the Bible back into Vacation Bible School.

I added 3 pictures of crafts I did with the 3rd and 4th graders the year we did Backstage.  The big superstars were on different colored card stock--and  hung on the wall with selected lyrics from Superstar.  The autograph page had each days clip art, verse and theme.  I put them a half sheet of posterboard, pre-pasted them so each day the kids could color in the appropriate sections, and we collected and gave autographs at the end of the week.  The guitar pick bookmark was stuck together with UGLU, an adhesive that bonds just about anything and did a nice job on the 2 guitar picks I used back to back on either side of the ribbon.  Hope these pictures help--or inspire you.  I often get an idea after looking at what others  have done.
While we didn't use all of the snack ideas from the curriculum the one that we enjoyed and worked really well with the lesson was the "Gorp".  The kids loved creating their own snack mix. We used plain and simple items like the cheerios and Teddy Grahams as well as dried fruits and chocolate chips.  The kids like the mix so well that we keep it on hand at all times for our Sunday school snacks.  It freezes well!

We decided to do break away from the "big company, box curriculum" & give Backstage a try. Here are some ideas we're bouncing around.

  • Tie-dye bandanas or marble paint them for our younger kids.
  •  Soap crosses - kids will get a cross template to carve a bar of soap into a cross shape b/c you know Jesus washes us squeaky clean....
  • Love the guitar pick necklace. Trying to find them cheap enough though. We're planning for over 600 kids @.20/pick not sure if it's in the budget. Plan to make paper beads made from magazine pages to go with it.
  • plastic canvas something - going old school on this one. Probably a windchime/whirly thing to hang with the Bible verse hanging from it.
  • Wordless books made from felt to send to Teen Mission International for them to send on their mission trips.
  • Prayer journal or devotion book
  • Stick puppet for our younger kids.

That's all we've got so far. Any other suggestions?

we may do dog tags...purchase plain ones from oriental trading and let children decorate with name and Bible verse depending on room.
Instead of the t-shirts we are going to have the kids do Bible covers.  Since we are focusing on putting the Bible back in VBS, we thought this was a great idea!  You can buy them for $12.99/dz from Oriental Trading Company!
Love this idea--the kids should love them and they are cheaper than shirts.
Hi Cherie! Our craft leader would like to do the Guitar pick necklace. Have you found a place to order bulk for the color of picks specified? And, I am wondering what paper beads are like? Thank you!

Judy,

We are going to use the www.pickworld.com that gofish suggests.  We are getting 150 of each of the 3 colors with the 1/8 in. holes put into them for $144.  I didn't think it was too bad of a price.

Ok, thanks! Yes, it does sound like a reasonable price. We only need 50 of each color. And they will drill the holes?

We are using Backstage With the Bible this year for our VBS. We are super excited! As for the craft ideas. Here is

what I came up with for one of the crafts. I collected old faded worn out blue jeans from our church members and

some from friends, etc.  We are cutting them up to make Bible covers from them! We purchased 50 cent New

Testaments to use for this project too. We are going to use fabric markers to decorate them. For our pre-schoolers I will pre-draw a cross on the front for them to color. The older children will use templates to trace

around for each day's symbol.  Those who are more artistic can free-hand theirs. I had seen the canvas Bible covers in OT and liked the idea, but decided using the old blue jeans would be a great way to get others involved AND we would be recycling and reusing!  thanks, Debbie

I wanted to use a cross as one of our craft projects for Backstage With the Bible. I found small wooden crosses at Hobby Lobby in the Easter section.  I asked everyone at our church to cut off from old dress shirts and other garments their small flat white buttons. We are going to paint the small wooden crosses red and glue the small

flat, white buttons and to decorate. We will add a ribbon or piece of jute for the hanger.  We are asking the children to save these and put them on their Christmas trees.  The crosses came 12 to a package for $3.99. But I

was able to get them 40% off.  I will have the kids to put their names on the back and the date.   Another way to

reuse and recycle is to take those men's shirts you cut the buttons off of and cut the collar off and the sleeves out and use these as PAINT smocks. Just turn the button side to the child's back and pin with a great big safety pin. Saves lots of little shirts and shorts!  Thanks, Debbie Shackelford
