Our VBS runs during the morning hours 9:00am - 12:noon. I have been very blessed to have over 100 youth and adult volunteers who are able to serve. I have three VBS groups running at the same time - Pre-school, K - 3 grade and 4 - 6 grade. Pre-School meets entirely on its own and does not combne with the other groups except for the Friday night program. K - 3 & 4 -6 grade meet together for opening and closing worship. K - 3 stay at the main church building and rotate by grades to the different stations. 4 -6 grade walk to the nearby elementary school and hold activites there. Because of the size of our VBS we only do 2 crafts (Tuesday & Thursday) and games on Mon, Wed, Fri.
We schedueld the "tour bus" to be at the church at 9:00am on Tuesday. Only the K - 3 grade classes went on the bus for their Bible story. They loved it. The bus company is across the street from the church.
Well, luckily we have a giant parachute and a couple of giant soccer balls. Those are really fun to just throw some games together with. I know one night they did a relay race where each stop had an instrument they had to play before they moved on to the next one. Tonight they played kick ball. Kids don't really care as long as they get to move! :))
We will have nursery - 2 years. We are encouraging our families to attend. If some children come without a family, we plan to asign them to a family or have some grandparents who would be willing to embrace some kids. With it being a family event...we thought the Go Fish theme would fit across the board. We are asking the older people in our congregation to be our leaders (bouncers) that lead our family groups from place to place. We will do the opening and closing much like the curriculum suggests. We will have 3 things they travel to the LESSON, CRAFT, and GAMES. We are coming up with crafts to work on together as a family...so we did change that part a little but kind of went with the ideas or made sure we could tie them into the theme...for example; one day we will make those canning jars that you put the receipes in...cookies is what we will do and they will make one for their family and one to give away. As far as our game time, we are playing "Minute to Win-it" games the directions will be there as well as people to help oversee it if they have questions. As far as the lesson, we will use some of the pastors we have or retired pastors, and we will begin in the Sunday Morning service and sing and do a lesson and invite people to do the drawing part on the walls in the hallway at the end of the service from lesson one. Of course on butcher paper! We even are asking the pastor to wear an 80's jumpsuit to preach in! (Don't know that will happen).
We haven't done it like this before...we thought we would try it and shorten up the week as well. That's why we want to begin in the morning service (it will be basic, but that lesson just seems introductory anyway). I have spent many hours visiting with people and with another children's pastor who has done a family style experience before.
